An Honest Talk About Mental Health and Exercise

This isn’t a post about motivation.
Or discipline.
Or “pushing through”.
It’s just an honest take.

Womans trainers on jog on forest path
There have been periods in my life where I felt low. Stuck. Guilty for no clear reason. Like I should be doing better, coping better, being better, but somehow wasn’t.
Nothing dramatic. Just a constant weight.
Exercise didn’t solve that.
But it helped more than I expected.

What it gave me, more than anything, was purpose. Somewhere to be. Something to do. A reason to get out of my own head for a while. On days where motivation was nowhere to be found, the routine carried me.

I notice it when I don’t train.
I get restless. Fidgety. My mind spins more. I mull things over. Old worries, small stresses, things I can’t change, they all get louder. Training seems to quiet that noise. Not silence it. Just turn the volume down enough to breathe.

People talk about endorphins, and maybe that’s part of it. But for me it’s more about regulation.

I feel steadier.

More capable.
More patient with people.

Clearer in my thinking.

Life doesn’t suddenly get easier, I just feel better equipped to deal with it.
Training also became a habit during a time when life was changing in big ways. Upheaval. Uncertainty. And alongside that, all the smaller, everyday stresses that never really go away. Once it became habitual, the days where I didn’t want to train became less frequent. Not because I was suddenly disciplined, but because showing up stopped being a decision.

Some days, the biggest benefit is simple: it takes my mind off things.

For an hour, life loosens its grip.
The noise fades a bit.
And that break matters more than people realise.

If you’re reading this and struggling, feeling overwhelmed, flat, or thinking exercise feels impossible right now, hear this:

It’s okay.
You’ll be okay.

This will pass.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to look impressive. It doesn’t have to be hard training or perfect consistency. Sometimes it’s a walk. Sometimes it’s gentle movement. Sometimes it’s rest. What matters is choosing yourself in whatever way you can today.

You’re not broken for feeling this way.
And you’re not alone.

“Owen has also worked with me to manage strength sessions that complement my running training and race preparation. I am very happy to recommend Owen and Strength for Life..” – Susan

Exercise isn’t a cure for mental health. But it can be a support. A steady anchor. Something solid when everything else feels a bit uncertain.

And sometimes, that’s enough to keep you moving forward.

Testimonials

“I needed to kick start my healthy lifestyle again after a few years off raising my two kids. It’s amazing how far you can slip once you stop exercising and how easy it is to sink into and accept unhealthy habits. Owen was great to work with and provided me with a personal plan to start off with at home. He educated me in many areas and filled me with confidence. Once I had a plan in place, before I knew it, I was reaching personal goals regularly and my clothes began to fit properly again. With a busy schedule, Owen tailored my programme around life’s busy moments. Would highly recommend Strength For Life. Big thanks to Owen.

Tim

I’ve been an online client of Strength for Life for a number of months. In that time I have seen much better progress and consistency than with my previous gym sessions. Owen worked with me to understand my goals, my fitness experience and my lifestyle, and built a bespoke programme to suit my needs. With weekly check-ins and a monthly review, the sessions have stayed interesting and it’s great to be able to ask questions and get feedback on progress. Owen is very encouraging and the accountability of a coach has kept me really consistent in a way I wouldn’t be on my own! Owen has also worked with me to manage strength sessions that complement my running training and race preparation. I am very happy to recommend Owen and Strength for Life.

Susan

I have trained with Owen for several months, and the results have been incredible. From day one, Owen took the time to understand my goals, fitness level, and any limitations, then built a program that was challenging, motivating, and realistic Every session is well-structured encouraging, and pushes me just enough to keep progressing without risking injury,
What really sets Oen apart is his energy and commitment. He holds me accountable, celebrate progress, and constantly adjust workouts to keep things fresh and effective. I’m stronger, more confident, and more consistent with my fitness than I’ve ever been. If you’re looking for a knowledgeable, supportive, and results-driven personal trainer, I can’t recommend Owen highly enough.
